The extraction of virgin clay: concessions

The collections of virgin mud, which will give rise to the mature thermal mud, are currently authorized as part of the B.I.O.C.E. in two thermo-mineral concessions:

  • LAKE LISPIDA” concession located in the municipalities of Battaglia Terme and Monselice (PD),
  • LAKE D’ARQUA” concession located in Arquà Petrarca (PD), near Lake Costa d’Arquà.

The “LAKE LISPIDA” concession located in the municipalities of Monselice and Battaglia Terme (PD) includes a small lake from which several thermal water springs come out with a temperature from 35 to 70° C.

From the bed of the lake, it is possible to extract virgin mud that can be used for the production of mature thermal mud for curative-therapeutic purposes.

The extraction was granted with the No. 110 Decision of the Regional Council on 6th November 1997 and later renewed with the provisions of the Euganean Hills Park Authority.

The “LAKE ARQUA” concession, located in Arquà Petrarca (PD), is currently used for the collection of virgin mud in quantities functional to the needs of the spa facilities.

The ‘FANGO LAGO COSTA D’ARQUA’ s.r.l. COMPANY is authorized for the collection from Lake Costa d’Arquà, located in the concession area. Subject to the provisions, the maximum extraction allowed in the five-year period covered by the aforementioned authorization is equal to 5,000 m3 with an annual extractable quantity established in 1,000 m3 to be implemented in the period from 15 November to 15 March of each year.

Mature thermal mud must be used inside the B.I.O.C.E. For this purpose, Gestione Unica (Unified Management) of B.I.O.C.E., with its technical staff, acts as an intermediary between the ‘FANGO LAGO COSTA D’ARQUA’ COMPANY and the owners of the spa facilities authorized under the B.I.O.C.E. in order to coordinate the supply of the required quantities of thermal mud in compliance with the provisions of the current Plan of Use of the Thermal Resource [Piano di Utilizzazione della Risorsa Termale (P.U.R.T.)]  and with the primary purpose of protecting the resource.
