Mud DOC

Among the typical products that characterize the history and reputation of the Veneto region in the world, there is the “Mud from the Euganean Thermal Basin” whose curative effectiveness was already known in the Paleo venetian age and which had great importance in Roman times. The mud used for therapeutic purposes in the Euganean Thermal Basin is a mixture of blue clay with thermal water (saline-bromine- water) subjected to a slow and complex biological maturation process. This process takes place in special tanks for about 50-60 days during which the clay is kept in continuous contact with thermal water that is made to flow at a constant rate. The temperature and chemical compounds of the thermal water of the Euganean Basin, as well as the ecosystem surrounding it, lead to a progressive colonization of the clay by numerous cyanobacteria and microalgae. The physical-chemical-biological modifications connected with the maturation process are strictly specific phenomena of each type of “thermal mud” that cannot be repeated outside of a specific reaction scheme based on three key macro-parameters: water, virgin mud and the ecosystem which affect all biological and chemical parameters. Indeed, “mature mud” is a system in a dynamic balance that involves clay, water and the infinite molecular species deriving from the metabolism and catabolism of biological species that have their habitat in the maturation tanks. Obviously, this habitat is a system open to the contribution of what derives from the surrounding ecosystem, such as pollen, algae and microorganism spores and etc., so that Euganean mud can’t be repeated and its properties can’t be reproduced outside the Euganean territory. The chemical and biochemical composition and chemical-physical characteristics of the Euganean Thermal Basin contribute to therapeutic potential of thermal mud that gets, in this territory, some specific characteristics that can’t be found in mud coming from different ecosystems (see the Regional Decision Act No.  857/10).

“Mud D.O.C. – Thermae Abano Montegrotto – Regione Veneto” is the collective brand of origin owned by the Veneto Region, established with decision No. 857 of 15th March 2010 and registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (i.e. EUIPO) on 15th January 2016 under No. 015010416.

Who can obtain the license to use the brand?

The license to use the brand can be granted to spa facilities that use thermal mud in the territory of the B.I.O.C.E. (i.e. the municipalities of Abano Terme, Arquà Petrarca, Baone, Battaglia Terme, Due Carrare, Galzignano Terme, Monselice, Montegrotto Terme, Teolo and Torreglia) for therapeutic purposes, provided that when they submit the application they demonstrate that they meet the requirements of the Regulations of use of the Collective Brand and the Regulations for the protection of the collective brand of origin of the mud of the Euganean Thermal Basin.
